Work on HTML 5 is rapidly progressing, yet it is still expected to continue for several years. Due to the requirement to produce test cases and achieve interoperable implementations, current estimates have work finishing in around ten to fifteen years.

- A List Apart: A Preview of HTML 5

Sorry, guys, but that's just pitiful. No new HTML until 2022? Are you braindead? I think we can consider the push for a new version to be dead, and the WHATWG to be a tragic, misguided joke. If you can't produce an improved version of HTML4 inside eighteen months, you should be potato farming. Really.

Edited to add: OK, I take it back. Hixie (OMG!!!1!!eleventyone!!! Hixie! Mr "Burn All Oggs" himself! <starstruck/>!!!) clarified fairly conclusively in a comment right here. It's not fifteen years until release; it's fifteen years until completion, and there'll be lots of entry ramps on the roadmap. I can handle that. So: sorry WHATWG, I still love you. Can we still be friends?
